Good Sammy Options Mentor
Working as a mentor is very different from my previous job as a lawyer but it’s even more rewarding. For the last 3 years I have been encouraging my clients to enjoy their lives, get involved in their communities and enjoy developing their independence.
A lot of my clients are really talented – I like to encourage their talent and focus on their abilities I am inspired when my clients achieve their goals – for example I had a young lady who had recently moved to a new house, but was afraid to go shopping and didn’t think she could do this herself, now she enjoys shopping, makes a shopping list, started using a calculator to congratulate herself on her savings!!
I have been supporting clients in my role as a Mentor for almost 2 years. In that time I have been able to utilise my skills and experience in working with clients in my past job roles in personal training, massage, and retail.
I have a keen interest in the area of social science and how the applications of the concepts I have learnt and experienced can help motivate and encourage the people I work with. I enjoy playing music as a musician and exploring and sharing my interests in science, sport, gaming, nature and culture, and derive a great sense of satisfaction from helping others explore their own interests.
My approach with my clients is a collaborative approach. My fundamental focus is on the discovery of responsibility, with the aim towards finding independence, and to then work back from that in order to identify barriers to improve upon. I would like to continually learn about the challenges and processes people with disabilities face and encourage awareness in the community.
I have been in teaching for many years and find it really rewarding and inspiring. To watch people grow and develop really make me feel that I am making a difference. I also have a brother with a disability so I working in this field is very close to my heart I love what I do with Good Sammy Options.
